Discover Roman Alcester

Roman Alcester is the exciting free-of-charge exhibition interpreting and displaying objects from Alcester’s Roman past and providing an information and learning resource on the Roman period.

Alcester is one of the most investigated Roman small towns in the country, with over 100 archaeological digs in the last 80 years. Recent excavations have revealed much about the area of the Roman town which would have been outside the boundary wall built in the 3rd century AD.

Come to Roman Alcester and find out what life was like there in Roman times between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.

New QR codes: To help you get the most from your visit, QR codes (example below) have been added to many artefacts which, via a smartphone code reader, will allow you to explore more detail than can be provided in the exhibit cases. If you don’t already have a QR code reader on your phone, you can download a FREE reader via your phone’s app store.

ROMAN FESTIVAL 2024

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Roman Museum, so we are planning a Festival for Saturday July 6th 2024. The RSC has offered its support to encourage schools and community groups to take part and design helmets and shields, which will be displayed as part of the Festival.

What’s Inside

Alcester Roman Museum pottery
The Museum collections focus on Roman Britain and there are pottery, coins, jewellery, a sample excavation, maps, other artefacts and a range of hands-on activities for families to explore.

The lack of damage to the Alcester Samian Ware collection (as illustrated above) is unusual. It is possible that a trader’s stock of bowls was buried during a fire or other catastrophic event.

Schools

school visits
Teachers – bring your class on a rewarding school visit.

Sorry but there are no more slots for school visits until the Autumn Term.

Learn more about the new School visits here.

Roman Alcester offers hands-on visits linked to the National Curriculum Key Stage 2. Other age groups can be accommodated by special arrangement.

Children can make use of all the museum’s facilities to bring Roman Britain alive. They can handle pottery and other artefacts and during the afternoon dress in Roman armour for a photo opportunity. We can also show a fun video of an imaginary day in the life of Roman Alcester.
